Probate documents illuminate the life of The House of the Seven Gables’ longest-lived resident, Mary Kitchen Turner (1684-1768). The daughter of a merchant family who married John Turner II at 18, Madam Turner survived her husband by 26 years without remarrying. This lecture will look at the material world that surrounded her as evidenced by a record of her expenses during her widowhood and the inventory of her estate. Learn about the life of a wealthy colonial woman, from the food she purchased to the clothing she wore, as well as the richness of probates as sources of historical information. While this is a free event, registration is required.
