SUMMARY:Salem Witch Trials Ancestors & Descendants Tour
DESCRIPTION:Salem will be 400 years old in 2026. It is rich in history\, including a critical role in the American Revolution and being the richest seaport per capita from 1790 to 1812. And then there is the 1692 Witch Trials. There were 156 official complaints and maybe 200 accused\, along with 70 afflicted persons\, nine judges\, dozens of jurors and hundreds who observed the trials. Calculations estimate that there could be more than 50 million descendants from the event. Many of them know but many don’t. Most have never been in the public eye. However\, many are famous and some are infamous. You’ll be surprised. \nThis tour will bring you throughout the downtown area of old Salem Towne\, discussing key people involved in the 1692 Witchcraft Trials and their descendants. Perhaps you are one of them.

SUMMARY:Tour Historic St. Peter’s Church
DESCRIPTION:Are you a descendant of Philip English\, accused of witchcraft in 1692\, whose family tree includes Hawthornes and Ingersolls? Perhaps your Massachusetts ancestors remained loyal to the English crown during the Revolution\, or you descend from a Salem ship captain\, enslaved person\, or from the great American mathematician and navigator\, Nathaniel Bowditch. How was an Anglican Church\, whose bell tower still houses the oldest (1740) church bell in the United States\, finally established in the Puritan town of Salem? Come hear the fascinating stories of historic St. Peter’s Church\, founded in 1733 and built on land donated by Philip English\, who is buried under the 1872 chapel. Join us on the steps of St. Peter’s for a Salem Ancestry Days concert on our 1885 bell carillon. Weighing over 5.5 tons and hanging high above Salem for 138 years and counting\, the carillon at St. Peter’s will ring at noon on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday for a brief concert of English and Spanish hymns and patriotic tunes to honor our ancestors! \n  \nTour Information

SUMMARY:Learning From Our Mistakes: Researching the Salem Witch Trials
DESCRIPTION:History is like a game of telephone: an incorrect fact can be passed from person to person and become conventional wisdom. Through diligent research\, historians strive to untangle these errors. \nJoin the Salem Witch Museum for an hour long\, free virtual lecture given by the Department of Education.  In this talk\, they will discuss some misconceptions about the Salem witch trials\, highlighting how mistakes are made\, repeated\, and eventually corrected. Where were the innocent victims executed? Were bored\, teenage girls to blame? What is the ergot theory? \nThe presentation will be recorded and shared on the Salem Witch Museum YouTube page for future accessibility. Registration is not required. The link will be posted on the Salem Witch Museum website and Facebook page prior to the lecture.

SUMMARY:Tour Historic St. Peter’s Church
DESCRIPTION:Are you a descendant of Philip English\, accused of witchcraft in 1692\, whose family tree includes Hawthorne’s and Ingersoll’s?

SUMMARY:Salem’s Remond Family: The Next Generations’ Connections to Newport & Providence
DESCRIPTION:Join Hamilton Hall and Harmony Grove Cemetery for a joint Salem Ancestry Days event on Sunday\, April 23 at 4:00PM. \nThis lecture explores the genealogy and legacy of prominent 19th- and 20th-century African-American New England families. Our speakers are Theresa Guzman Stokes and Keith Stokes of the 1696 Heritage Group. \nThe Stokes will together draw connections between descendants of Salem’s Remond family and the Rice\, Sherman and Babcock families of the Newport\, Rhode Island area. Along the way\, stories of soldiers\, sailors\, activists and entrepreneurs among these families outline a rarely-seen African-American dynastic lineage connecting history with today’s living descendants. \n\n\nThe Remonds were a prominent Black family of entrepreneurs and activists who lived in Salem in the 19th century. John and Nancy Remond were the first resident managers and caterers of Hamilton Hall. They were well-known locally for their many business ventures and social activism. \nWhen segregation limited their children’s educational opportunities\, John and Nancy Remond uprooted their lives to move to Newport\, RI for several years. It is no wonder that two of their children\, Sarah Parker Remond and Charles Lenox Remond\, grew to become prominent abolitionist speakers. \nWhile John and Nancy ultimately returned to Salem\, their descendants put down roots in Rhode Island. This event will explore this remarkable family’s connection to the Ocean State. \nDon’t miss this fascinating exploration of the lives and legacies of a remarkable family.
